Unique viewing experience across multiple platforms and devices

What we do  /  Streaming applications development  /  O2 project

A major multi service operator in an Eastern European country operating several million lines in both fixed and mobile networks including a 3G, CDMA (for data), UMTS and EDGE, enabling voice, data and video transmission.

Business challenges

O2, one of the major European operators intended to enhance their service offering, reduce churn across the subscriber base, and increase ARPU by implementing cutting-edge interactive capabilities for viewers.
To help O2 achieve this strategic goal, Smartlabs implemented a combined OTT/IPTV solution delivering a set of compelling interactive features, built a highly-customized frontend app for multiple platforms, and provided full support of SmartTVs.

Solution highlights

Full support of key Live TV and VoD services: LiveTV, EPG, CatchUP, nPVR, VoD, subscription control, etc.

Tailored animated design for SmartTV and AndroidTV

Third-party backend integration

WebOS and Tizen SmartTV OS support

Widevine DRM integration

Access to HBO MAX

Adding interactive features and stunning UIs to keep hundreds of thousand of TV customers happy

When the project started several years ago, the new service employed SmartLabs’ Linux STBs supporting IPTV/OTT/DVB services. The bespoke frontend app was developed and built on an elegant design created by one ofO2’s partners.

The sophisticated UX design leveraged complex animation effects, which delivered outstanding performance thanks to SmartLabs software and middleware solution capabilities. We integrated the app with the existing and complex backend using their API.

Later in the project we integrated and deployed the new apps with platforms such as LG and Samsung SmartTVs, as well as Android TV STBs. We are continuously adding new highly anticipated services and integrations, such as  HBO MAX VoD library, helping 02 increase the attractiveness of their TV service.

The next step in the project was the unique migration of STB users from a Linux to Android TV environment.
