The "All-Russian" IPTV from SmartLabs

May. 18, 2012
On May 14, at the Sviaz-Expocomm-2012 tradeshow, Moscow, Rostelecom announced the launch of its unified IPTV service throughout Russia. The solution enabling provision of such a global service was implemented by SmartLabs.

SmartLabs designed and built a centralized system covering 7 macro-regional and 77 regional branches of the operator. The system enables content preparation, distribution and delivery, service management, data encryption, and generation of statistics and allows for end-to-end coordination of Rostelecom's regional offices from a central head-end.

To shed light on the background for such an ambitious project and the technologies involved, Andrey Kholodny, the Director of Media Products at Rostelecom and Mikhail Grachev , SmartLabs CEO, have given an extensive interactive presentation at the exhibition.

Please find a brief overview of the presentation on YouTube.

With the SmartLabs solution, Rostelecom's subscribers have gained access to a broad range of interactive state-of-the-art media entertainment services, from Video on Demand (VoD) through Time Shift TV to social networking on all the available platforms including TVs, tablets, PCs, and smartphones. Also, they can now enjoy Zabava.ru, a multimedia portal offering all types of content: video, music, games, software, and e-books.

"We are happy to collaborate with Rostelecom under this global project," says Mikhail Grachev, SmartLabs CEO. "Providing of a whole range of interactive services on such a vast territory sets specific requirements for the solution functionality and reliability. The SmartLabs technology allowed us to successfully meet this challenge and enable intensive IPTV growth in Rostelecom in the foreseeable future."

On May 17, at the celebration dedicated to launching of the end-to-end IPTV service, SmartLabs was awarded special prizes for its successful and efficient work as the general contractor and the platform/STB provider under the contract.
